August has arrived. The bags are by the door, the flight to Lisbon or Porto is booked, and in your head is an endless list of things to sort out during the holidays: seeing family, the house, friends, dealing with paperwork — and those teeth that kept getting put off because in France, the United Kingdom or Switzerland the cost of a simple appointment already hurts before you even sit in the chair.
The good news is that this combination — a holiday in Portugal and dental treatment — is no coincidence. More and more Portuguese expats plan their trip home with a dental agenda in mind. And for very concrete reasons: European quality, up-to-date technology and a price that, compared with what you pay abroad, seems almost unreal.
Why Have Your Teeth Treated in Portugal?
The price difference is real and significant. Dental treatments in Portugal can be 60 to 70% cheaper than in the United Kingdom, France or Switzerland — without any compromise on quality. Portuguese clinics are regulated by the ERS (the Health Regulatory Authority), dentists are registered with the OMD (the Portuguese Dental Association) and all the materials used are CE-certified, exactly the same safety standards as any other country in the European Union.
To give you a concrete idea:
- A complete dental implant that in France or the UK costs between €2,500 and €3,500 — is found in Portugal for between €1,200 and €1,700
- A full All-on-4 rehabilitation, which in London or Zurich can exceed €20,000 per arch — costs between €8,000 and €12,000 in Portugal, with zirconia, digital technology and a specialist surgeon
- Ceramic veneers that in Geneva cost between €800 and €1,200 per tooth — cost between €350 and €600 in Portugal
The maths does itself. And you still have time for the sardine grills and coffee with grandma.
Who Are the Expats Who Come to Treat Their Teeth on Holiday?
There is a very common profile: someone who emigrated 5 or 10 years ago, who kept putting off routine appointments because the healthcare system in their host country is expensive, bureaucratic or has long waiting lists, and who has built up a backlog of treatments. Cavities to be filled, a removable denture that no longer fits well, an extraction never replaced with an implant. The holidays are the window — and Portugal, the solution.
But there are also those who come with more specific goals: the smile they always wanted, which here costs a third of the price. Veneers. Whitening. A complete rehabilitation with fixed implants. Treatments that in the country where they live are financially out of reach, but that in Portugal become affordable — with results and quality that go home with the expat.
What Can Be Done in 2 Weeks?
The honest answer is: it depends on the case. But there is a lot that can be done — and the key is to start preparing before you fly.
Treatments in 1 to 3 Days
For those with little time available or who want to combine it with a shorter visit:
- Assessment appointment and full diagnosis — includes a panoramic X-ray, CBCT if needed, and a detailed treatment plan with a fixed quote
- Scaling and professional oral hygiene — an essential basis for any other treatment
- In-clinic teeth whitening — an immediate result in a session of 1 to 2 hours
- Composite fillings — cavities, fractures, enamel wear
- Simple extractions and emergency appointments
- Starting treatment with clear aligners — assessment, records and delivery of the first set of aligners to take with you
Treatments in 1 Week
- Immediate-load implant (“a tooth in 1 day”) — placement of the implant and a fixed temporary prosthesis on the same day. You leave the clinic with the tooth. The final zirconia prosthesis is placed on a later visit, typically 4 to 6 months afterwards
- Crowns and bridges on natural teeth — with a digital workflow (intraoral scanner and CAD/CAM production), it is possible to have the final crown in 2 to 5 days without waiting for the traditional laboratory
- Composite veneers — an immediate result, in one or two sessions
- Root canal treatment (endodontics) — complete resolution in 1 to 3 appointments

Treatments in 2 Weeks
With two weeks available, it is possible to start and complete higher-impact treatments:
- All-on-4 or All-on-6 — full rehabilitation of one or both arches. With the immediate-load protocol, the surgery is done in a single day: the implants are placed and the temporary prosthesis is fixed on the same day. In two weeks, the assessment, the surgery and the post-operative check-up appointment are carried out. The final zirconia prosthesis is placed on the next visit to Portugal — whether at Christmas, Easter or the following holidays
- Partial rehabilitation with multiple implants — 2 to 4 single implants with immediate temporary crowns
- Porcelain ceramic veneers — assessment, tooth preparation and cementation in 2 to 3 appointments over 10 to 14 days
- Complete periodontal treatment — assessment, scaling and root planing, and a maintenance plan to continue at home
Treatments That Require Two Visits to Portugal
It is important to be honest: there are treatments that, for biological reasons, cannot be completed in a single stay, regardless of the technology available. A conventional implant — without immediate loading — requires an osseointegration period of 3 to 6 months between placing the implant and the final crown. In these cases, the ideal strategy is to do the surgery on one visit and the final crown on the next: summer and Christmas, for example. It is an approach that many expats adopt successfully, and which allows the treatment to be managed without rushing.
How to Prepare for the Trip Before You Leave
This is the step that makes the most difference — and the one most expats overlook. Don’t wait until you arrive in Portugal to book an appointment.
Before you fly, we recommend:
- Ask your dentist abroad for a recent panoramic X-ray. Most healthcare systems or insurers cover this X-ray — and sending it before you come allows us to prepare a full treatment plan before the first day of your appointment
- Take photos of your smile — front-on, in profile and with your mouth open. The more information the clinic has beforehand, the more efficient and focused the first appointment is
- Make a list of the medications you take regularly. Some anticoagulants, antihypertensives or bisphosphonates can influence the planning of certain surgeries — this is essential information for the dentist
- Contact the clinic 4 to 8 weeks in advance, especially if you are coming in August — demand from expats at this time is high and the diary fills up quickly
- Plan the first appointment for the second or third day after arrival. The first day back always has unexpected events and readjustments. From the second day on, you are more available and rested for the appointment
Practical Questions Expats Ask Most Often
Can I use the European Health Insurance Card?
The EHIC covers urgent, unforeseen healthcare in EU countries — it does not cover planned dental treatments. For expats in the post-Brexit United Kingdom, the GHIC has similar cover, equally limited for elective dentistry. Treatments at Porto Smile are paid directly by the patient. However, some private health insurers — in particular French insurers (mutuelles) or international policies — may partially reimburse treatments carried out abroad. It is worth checking your policy before you come and asking us for a detailed invoice with the appropriate procedure codes.
What if there is a complication after returning abroad?
Modern dentistry has effective mechanisms for continuing treatment at a distance. At Porto Smile, we offer post-treatment follow-up by teleconsultation — it is possible to assess photos, X-rays and symptoms remotely, and to coordinate with the patient’s local dentist when necessary. For implantology treatments, the protocols are standardised internationally, which makes continuity of care in another country easier.
Does the Porto Smile team speak English?
The team communicates in Portuguese, English and Spanish. The most important thing is that the patient understands the treatment plan, the quote and the post-operative care — and there are no barriers there.
Porto Smile — Close to the Airport, Far from Worries
Porto Smile Clinic is located in Matosinhos, less than 20 minutes from Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport. For those flying from Paris Charles de Gaulle, Lyon, Geneva, Zurich, London or Luxembourg — cities where much of the Portuguese expat community lives — being close to the airport is a real convenience. You arrive, get treated and go home, with no hours of travel.
Dr. Elton Matias Dias has over 20 years of clinical experience, specialising in advanced implantology (All-on-4 and All-on-6), implant-supported prosthetics and digital dentistry. The clinic works with a complete digital workflow — intraoral scanner, computer-guided 3D planning and CAD/CAM production — which makes it possible to shorten treatment times, reduce the number of appointments needed and ensure predictable results from the very first appointment.
If you live outside Portugal and want to use your holidays to look after your smile, contact us before you come. We carry out a free remote assessment, send you a personalised treatment plan and organise the schedule so that your time in Portugal is used to the full — with no days lost to unnecessary preparatory appointments.
