What are clear aligners?

Clear aligners are custom-made, transparent and removable trays that gradually move the teeth into the correct position. They are practically invisible, comfortable and let you maintain normal oral hygiene — without the constraints of traditional fixed braces.

What is the difference between clear aligners and fixed braces?

Aligners are removable, discreet and comfortable — ideal for those who want discretion in everyday life. Fixed braces are bonded to the teeth and are better suited to more complex cases. At Porto Smile we assess each case and recommend the solution that gives the best result for your specific situation.

Do clear aligners work for more severe cases?

Yes — aligner technology has advanced greatly and now handles the vast majority of cases, including moderate to severe misalignments, crossbites and diastemas. Only cases of extreme complexity may require fixed braces. The assessment with Dr Aline determines which option is most effective.

How long does treatment with clear aligners take?

The duration varies with the complexity of the case — on average between 6 and 18 months. Simple cases can be completed in under 6 months; more complex cases can take up to 2 years. The treatment plan defined at the assessment always includes the estimated duration.

Do clear aligners hurt?

It is normal to feel some pressure and slight discomfort in the first few days with each new aligner — a sign that the teeth are moving. This discomfort is temporary and much milder than with fixed braces. Most patients adapt quickly and feel no pain.

Can I remove the aligners to eat and brush my teeth?

Yes — this is one of the great advantages of clear aligners. You remove them to eat, drink (except water), brush your teeth and floss normally. The aligners should be worn at least 20 to 22 hours a day for the treatment to progress as planned.
