You’re visiting Portugal, you have an important meeting tomorrow, or you simply lead a busy life, and suddenly an old crown comes loose, a tooth chips, or a filling gives way halfway through a meal. The first reaction is usually pure frustration: “I don’t have time for this right now.” The second is assuming you’ll have to wait days, come back for a second appointment, or walk around with a temporary fix until it’s properly sorted.

It doesn’t always have to be that way. Thanks to digital technology, it’s now possible, in many cases, to fix a crown, a small bridge, an inlay or an onlay in a single visit — no waiting for a lab, no temporary tooth, and no need to come back days later.

When this kind of urgency happens

This type of situation is more common than you’d think, and it never picks a convenient moment:

• You’re on holiday or a business trip in Portugal and a tooth breaks, an old crown comes loose, or a filling fails — and losing days of your trip searching for a dentist, or heading home without solving it, isn’t an option.
• You have an important event coming up — an interview, a wedding, a presentation, a photo shoot — and a visibly damaged tooth can’t wait for the normal schedule.
• You live abroad and are visiting family, with a short window of time before returning to the country where you work, and you’d rather sort it out now.
• You’re about to board a long flight or travel somewhere with limited access to dental care, and would rather not risk leaving a problem unresolved.
• You’re a professional with a packed schedule of meetings and travel, for whom returning to the clinic two or three times for the same treatment simply doesn’t fit the calendar.

What makes same-day treatment possible

Traditionally, a crown, inlay or onlay involved a multi-step process: a mould of the mouth, sent to an external lab, one to two weeks of waiting, and a temporary restoration in the meantime — with all the discomfort and risk of it coming loose before the final piece arrives.

Digital technology has drastically shortened this process. With an intraoral scanner, we get a precise digital reading of the tooth, without uncomfortable silicone moulds. From that reading, Porto Smile has, in-house, the entire process needed to design and manufacture the restoration on-site — including high-strength resin 3D printing, which produces reliable, aesthetically finished pieces within hours. This means that, in many cases, assessment, manufacturing and placement all happen in the same visit.

What can be fixed in a single appointment

Depending on the clinical assessment, many of these situations can be resolved the same day:

• Dental crowns, on natural teeth or implants
• Inlays and onlays (partial restorations, more conservative than a full crown)
• Small bridges, to replace a missing tooth
• Repair or replacement of an old restoration that has failed

There are more complex situations — for example, when the tooth will be under heavy chewing force and a milled ceramic restoration is chosen — where the process can take a little longer, typically a few days. Even in these cases, we can usually protect the tooth immediately and move forward with the essentials without disrupting your schedule.

Why it’s not worth putting off

A tooth with a loose, chipped or missing restoration isn’t just an aesthetic issue. While the tooth remains exposed or poorly protected, the risk of bacterial infiltration increases, along with pain when chewing or with temperature — and, in some cases, the problem can evolve into something more serious than it started as: a simple repair can, over time, turn into something that requires root canal treatment.

There’s also a practical factor: travelling or working with an unstable or uncomfortable tooth tends to take up more headspace than you’d expect, even without obvious pain. Dealing with it as soon as it comes up — rather than “toughing it out until there’s time” — is usually the simpler option in the medium term too.
