🎓 Dr Elton Dias is a periodontics specialist — the dental speciality dedicated to the health of the gums and the bone that supports the teeth. Not a general dentist doing gum treatment: a specialist trained specifically in this field.

Treatments available

From prevention to surgery — all of periodontics in one place.

🦷 Scaling

Professional removal of tartar (dental calculus) that home brushing cannot eliminate. Essential to prevent gingivitis and periodontitis. Recommended every 6 months.

🔬 Periodontitis Treatment

Scaling and root planing (SRP) to eliminate the infection in the periodontal pockets. It controls the disease and stabilises the bone support of the teeth.

😬 Tooth Sensitivity

Treatment of hypersensitivity caused by gum recession or exposed roots. Minimally invasive procedures to restore everyday comfort.

⚠️ Tooth Mobility (Loose Tooth)

Assessment and treatment of tooth mobility caused by loss of periodontal bone support. The sooner it is treated, the greater the chance of saving the teeth.

🦴 Guided Bone Regeneration

A surgical technique that rebuilds the bone lost to periodontitis, using membranes and biomaterials. It can recover bone support and make future restorations possible.

✨ Aesthetic Gum Surgery

Correction of a gummy smile (excess gum visible when smiling) and harmonisation of the gum line. Immediate aesthetic result with a quick recovery.

✂️ Frenectomy (Labial / Lingual Frenulum)

Surgical removal of the labial or lingual frenulum when it compromises gum health, speech or the space between the teeth. A quick procedure with immediate recovery.

📐 Crown Lengthening

A procedure that exposes more tooth structure by removing excess gum and/or bone. Indicated to make restorations or crowns possible, or for aesthetic reasons.

How does the process work?

01

Complete periodontal assessment

Periodontal probing, periapical X-rays and a diagnosis of the state of the gums and supporting bone. You find out exactly how advanced the disease is and what treatment is needed.

02

Personalised treatment plan

From simple scaling to surgery, the plan is defined in phases — from the least to the most invasive. Always with the goal of stabilising the disease and restoring periodontal health.

03

Active treatment

Scaling, scaling and root planing (SRP), periodontal surgery or bone regeneration — as indicated. Carried out under local anaesthetic with maximum comfort.

04

Periodontal maintenance

Regular check-up appointments to monitor the stability of the disease and prevent recurrence. Maintenance is part of the treatment — it is not optional.

What is periodontics?

Periodontics is the dental speciality dedicated to the health of the structures that support the teeth — gums, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. It treats conditions such as gingivitis and periodontitis, and carries out surgical procedures such as bone regeneration, aesthetic gum surgery, frenectomy and crown lengthening. At Porto Smile, this speciality is practised by Dr Elton Dias, a periodontics specialist.

Is bleeding gums normal?

No — bleeding gums when brushing or flossing is not normal. It is the most common sign of gingivitis, the initial stage of periodontal disease. Left untreated, gingivitis develops into periodontitis, which destroys the bone that supports the teeth and can lead to their loss. Bleeding gums should always be assessed by a specialist.

What is periodontitis and how is it treated?

Periodontitis is a chronic gum infection that progressively destroys the bone supporting the teeth. It begins with untreated gingivitis and develops silently — often without pain. Treatment includes professional scaling, scaling and root planing (SRP) to eliminate the infection in the periodontal pockets, and periodontal surgery in more advanced cases. Regular maintenance is essential to control the disease.

My tooth is loose — what should I do?

Tooth mobility is a sign of advanced loss of periodontal bone support. It should be assessed urgently — the later the treatment, the lower the chance of recovering the bone and keeping the tooth. At Porto Smile, Dr Elton Dias assesses the cause of the mobility and defines the appropriate treatment plan, which may include SRP, periodontal surgery or guided bone regeneration.

What is guided bone regeneration?

Guided bone regeneration is a surgical technique that rebuilds the bone lost to periodontitis, using membranes and biomaterials that guide the growth of new bone. It is indicated in cases of localised bone loss and can recover enough support to keep the tooth or make future implant placement possible.

What is aesthetic gum surgery?

Aesthetic gum surgery corrects situations where the gum is excessively visible when smiling (a gummy smile), harmonises the gum line when it is uneven, or removes excess gum that makes the teeth look short. It is a quick procedure, carried out under local anaesthetic, with recovery in a few days and an immediate aesthetic result.

What is a frenectomy and when is it indicated?

A frenectomy is the surgical removal of the labial frenulum (a fold of tissue between the lip and the gum) or lingual frenulum (under the tongue). It is indicated when the frenulum is excessively thick or low, causing a diastema (a gap between the front teeth), gum recession, restricted tongue movement or speech difficulties. The procedure is quick, under local anaesthetic and with a very fast recovery.
