Questions about dentures and prosthetics
What is the difference between a fixed and a removable prosthesis?
A fixed prosthesis (crowns and bridges) is cemented or screwed in and cannot be removed — it behaves like a natural tooth. A removable prosthesis can be taken out for cleaning. The choice depends on the number of missing teeth, bone and gum health, and the patient's goals.
How long does a dental prosthesis last?
With proper care, a fixed zirconia or ceramic prosthesis can last 15 to 20 years or more. Removable prostheses last less and may need relining or replacement over time.
Is an implant-supported prosthesis better than a traditional denture?
In most cases, yes. An implant-supported prosthesis is fixed, stable and requires no adhesive. It preserves the bone of the upper and lower jaw, offers greater comfort when chewing and is aesthetically superior. A conventional full denture can be a temporary solution or an alternative when implants are not indicated.
How many appointments are needed to make a prosthesis?
It depends on the type of prosthesis and on each case. With our digital workflow and in-house laboratory, we can reduce the number of sessions. In simple cases, the temporary prosthesis can be made in the same appointment; the final one usually requires 2 to 4 appointments.
Will the prosthesis look natural?
Yes. With today's materials — zirconia, feldspathic ceramic and high-performance resins — and with digital planning, we achieve results aesthetically very close to natural teeth, including colour, shape and translucency.
How do I care for a removable prosthesis?
It should be removed and cleaned after each meal with a suitable brush and mild soap or a specific product. At night, store it in a container with water or a cleaning solution. The supporting implants or teeth should be cleaned with special care.
What is complete oral rehabilitation?

Can I have a prosthesis if my gums are compromised?
It depends on the degree of involvement. In many cases, periodontal treatment comes before the prosthesis — the gum disease must be stabilised before rehabilitation. Dr Elton assesses and defines the most suitable sequence for your specific case.
