Frequently asked questions
Questions about children's dentistry
From what age should I take my child to the dentist?
We recommend the first appointment at around 12 months, or as soon as the first baby tooth comes through, whichever happens first. Starting early allows problems to be spotted sooner and builds a positive relationship with the dentist from babyhood.
Do baby teeth really need treatment?
Yes. Baby teeth are essential for chewing, speech and the development of the dental arch. An untreated cavity can cause pain, infection, early tooth loss and compromise the space for the permanent tooth.
What are fissure sealants and what are they for?
They are a preventive material applied to the chewing surfaces of the permanent molars to seal the grooves where bacteria build up. They are quick, painless and significantly reduce the risk of cavities in these areas.
How can I prepare my child for the first appointment?
Talk about the dentist in a positive way and avoid words such as "pain" or "needle". Read children's books about the dentist. At Porto Smile, Dr Aline Calvete is experienced in welcoming anxious children — you can leave that part to us.
What is interceptive orthodontics?
It is an orthodontic treatment started while there are still baby teeth or during the mixed dentition phase (baby + permanent), at around 6-9 years old. It corrects habits and abnormal positions while growth is still active, avoiding longer, more complex treatments in adolescence.
From when should I brush my baby's teeth?
As soon as the first tooth comes through, with a finger brush or a very small toothbrush, without toothpaste. From the age of 2, introduce a tiny amount (the size of a grain of rice) of fluoride toothpaste.
